Faculty Overview

  • The Faculty of Social Science is the largest faculty at Western with 239
    faculty members, over 6,400 undergraduates and 550 graduate students.
    Our alumni network of over 68,000 extends around the globe.
  • The Faculty is widely recognized for its excellent research programs, the
    quality of its undergraduate teaching, and its innovative graduate
    programs.
  • Over the last four years, the Faculty has consistently been ranked as one
    of the top 100 Social Science Faculties in the world by the Higher
    Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council, the QS Corporation, and
    the Academic Rankings of World Universities.

Departmental Overview

  • Innovative academic programs include: American Studies; Commercial Aviation; First Nations Studies; International Relations; Migration and Ethnic Relations; Public Administration; and Theory and Criticism.
  • Our faculty members have received numerous teaching honors, including several prestigious 3M Teaching Awards.
  • Our faculty members are routinely featured in the national and international media, highlighting their research and expertise.
  • The Economics department is among the very best in Canada and our graduates hold eminent positions in business and
    government throughout the world.
  • The Psychology department co-hosts the internationally renowned Centre for Brain and Mind and houses the Advanced
    Facility for Avian Research that features a wind tunnel to study bird migration.
  • The Dan Management and Organizational Studies program serves over one third of all Social Science students.
  • The Commercial Aviation Management stream in the Dan Program is the only one of its kind in Canada. It enables students to earn a Commercial Pilot’s License (approved by Transport Canada) while attaining their MOS degree.
  • Undergraduate programs are enhanced by internships, selected job shadowing opportunities, visiting speakers
    and career counselling.
  • Several departments offer degrees in applied areas including: Applied Archaeology, Public History, and Migration and Ethnic Relations.

Research

  • Research funding in Social Science has steadily increased over the years to $9.8 million in 2009-10. Over 500 grants are held by members of our faculty.
  • The Faculty is home to a Statistics Canada Research Data Centre, a facility owned and operated by Statistics Canada that offers secure local access to confidential data from Statistics Canada for government approved qualified researchers.
  •  The Faculty is affiliated with the Museum of Ontario Archaeology in London, which has a state-of-the art facility for storing and studying indigenous artifacts.
