Social Science Summer Internship Program

About the Program

The Faculty of Social Science offers a summer internship program for qualified main campus students in their 2nd or 3rd year of study to gain degree-related work experience. This internship program will roll out in phases and not all students in all programs/departments in the faculty will find postings relevant to their degree initially. However, students MAY find their own internship provided the position and the student meet the requirements they can be enrolled in the program. This must be done in advance of beginning the work term, with no exceptions. Summer internships must be a minimum of 10 weeks full-time, paid employment. Unpaid internships are not considered as part of this program.

Qualifications

Students must:

  • Be enrolled full-time in their second or third year
  • Have an academic average of at least 70%
  • Have a clean academic record
  • Register through CareerCentral
  • Attend a preparation workshop
  • Must be returning to full-time studies following summer work term

Registration Steps

Registering for the program does not obligate you in any way. You are merely expressing an interest and establishing your eligibility to participate. To view postings, students must register and then be approved by an administrator. Questions should be directed to Social Science Career Services, SSC room 2040.

  • Register through Career Central (Internship tab, Apply to Internship/Co-op, check the box for Social Science Summer Internship Program)
  • Meet the qualifications of the program
  • Attend a Preparation Session

International students accepted into the summer internship program will need to apply for and obtain an Off-Campus Work Permit prior to beginning their summer internship. For assistance on applying for an Off-Campus Work Permit, please contact the International and Exchange Student Centre.

Additionally, the fee for the internship has been determined and it is $450

Policies and Procedures

  • Student participation in the summer internship program is voluntary.
  • Acceptance into the program does not guarantee a placement.
  • Students wishing to participate must register through CareerCentral. Most internship placements occur by competition, using the process of posting jobs, submission of applications, and interviews between employers and students.
  • Summer internship job descriptions are posted through CareerCentral (Jobs – Advanced Search – Internship/Co-op)
  • All job offers are extended through The Student Success Centre. CAUTION: Consider your acceptance of an offer with great care. Once you accept, you are committed to the employer unless there are unforeseen circumstances. Also, once an offer has been accepted you may not apply for other positions.
  • Students are permitted to find their own paid summer internships, In this case the job description must be reviewed to ensure that it meets the program criteria in advance of beginning the work term, no exceptions will be made.
  • Work during the summer internship is full-time and is considered degree related work.
  • A summer internship period should be a minimum of 10 weeks.
  • Students who have accepted a Summer Internship position are required to sign a contract with The Student Success Centre.
  • Any student who accepts a summer internship offer and signs a contract with The Student Success Centre, then reneges on the offer, will be required to withdraw from the program.
  • Internship fees are NON refundable and are not tax deductible.
  • You cannot take a course during your summer work term.
  • The employer supervises a student’s performance and provides a written evaluation at the end of the work term. This evaluation must be submitted to the faculty.
  • Employer evaluations will be part of a student’s university record.
  • Returning interns must submit a written report.

Course and Fees

If a student is hired into a summer internship position, they will be enrolled in a summer course. In order to pass the internship course:

  •  Successfully complete internship work term
  • Submit an employer performance evaluation upon return to school
  • Write a written report
  • Pay the required fee. Please note that the fee is not refundable and is not considered tuition, therefore it cannot be claimed as a tax deduction.
