Alumni, donor, and now honorary degree holder.
On October 26, 2018 Aubrey Dan received a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa (LLD) from Western University, as part of the Fall 2018 Convocation ceremonies.
Aubrey Dan is a Canadian businessman, Tony-Award winning producer (Memphis), impresario and philanthropist. In 2002, Dan founded Dancap Private Equity, a private firm that invests its own funds in mid-market Canadian businesses and acts as a co-investment partner for medium to large-sized international businesses.
A Western alumnus, the DAN Department of Management & Organizational Studies is named in his honour. Dan has generously supported DAN Management through two $5-million gifts.
Speaking in June 2017, Dan said his experience at Western in the Faculty of Social Science was transformative. “It doesn’t matter what business I’m in today, the most relevant skill I have is people management, which I developed in the Faculty of Social Science,” said Dan.
“I am honoured and humbled to receive the Honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Going to Western, turned out to be the best choice I ever made in my life for an education, providing me with skill sets and knowledge that I continue to use every day of my life,” said Dan. “Receiving this recognition is the cherry on top of the sundae with my involvement and commitment to the success of the students in the DAN Department of Management and Organizational Studies.”
“Western is lucky to have such a strong partnership with Aubrey Dan. His support of DAN Management, and the Faculty of Social Science more generally, is unequalled,” said Bob Andersen, Dean of the Faculty of Social Science. “His vast philanthropic efforts – supporting education, health care and community building projects – have a had a profound impact on Canadian society.”
