How Much Should I pay a Graduate Research Assistant (GRA)?
Although it is up to the discretion of the grant holder how much to pay a GRA, the Tri-Council Agencies (CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC) do outline the following salary/stipend restrictions.
Masters Student
- CIHR: $17,850
- NSERC: $16,500
- SSHRC: $12,000
Doctoral Student
- CIHR: $17,850
- NSERC: $19,000
- SSHRC: $15,000
Postdoctoral
- CIHR: $36,750 Minimum (Note: Must begin training within 5 years after obtaining PhD. Maximum support of 3 years.)
- NSERC: $25,000 for a maximum of 2 years (3 years if to
attract exceptional foreign candidates, must be offered at the start of the position and NSERC notified) - SSHRC: $31,500 Maximum

- Full-time Appointments – 27.5%
- Part-time and contract Appointments – 13% (Western Human Resource Services)
