Computing Accounts, Policies and Rates

The following members of the UWO community are eligible for a free SSC Network computer account:

  • Students currently registered in the Faculty of Social Science (Main Campus), or currently registered in a Social Science course (Main Campus) for which the instructor requests SSC Network student class accounts. Class accounts terminate at the completion of a course.

  • Faculty & Staff members in the Faculty of Social Science (Main Campus).

  • Guest and Special UWO community members working on projects that require use of the SSC Network, who have sponsorship by a Social Science department.

SSC Network accounts have access to:

  • electronic mail facilities
  • personal disk space on a file server (30 MB for undergraduates; 50 MB for others)
  • additional server storage is available via the network Scratch service
  • modem pools (for Internet access from home) and remote access software services
  • computing rooms equipped with networked IBM-compatible PCs for individual computing or for teaching purposes
  • the Internet
  • on-campus printing facilities (fee for service)
  • a wide variety of software and information services

How to get your SSC Network computer account?

  • Students
Students currently registered in the faculty of Social Science are automatically given an SSC Network account. Students currently registered in a Social Science course for which the instructor requests SSC Network student accounts will be given accounts when the instructor makes the request to SSCL. SSC Network account usernames are exactly the same as ITS Personal Computer Account login names. SSC Network account passwords are the student's 9 digit ID number.

  • Faculty & Staff
Social Science faculty & staff members will automatically be issued an SSC Network account the day after they acquire an ITS Personal Computer Account. SSC Network account usernames are exactly the same as ITS Personal Computer Account login names. SSC Network account passwords are the employee's 9 digit ID number.

  • Guest/Special UWO Community Members
Applications are available from the SSCL Main Office, Room 1008, SSC.

Policies for SSC Network Account Holders

SSC Network account holders are subject to the SSCL Conditions of Use and the UWO Appropriate Use of Computing and Networking Facilities policies.

Food and Drink Policy

Policy

Water, food and drink (including empty or capped containers) are not permitted in any of the computing rooms (except for rooms 1012 & 1020) and must be kept stored away. (See the more general Conditions of Use.)

Rationale

The Social Science Computing Laboratory is committed to providing high quality computers to all Social Science users. Spilled beverages and food crumbs can damage the computer (including the CPU, keyboard & mouse) requiring replacement or repair (sometimes extensive) and resulting in computers not being available. To maximize the number of computers available for use and maintain a clean work environment for all students to share, we ask that you please cooperate with this policy.

Enforcement

Signage has been clearly posted on entrance doors to the computing rooms and on the login screen so that ignorance of this policy is not acceptable. All rooms are equipped with surveillance hardware.

We feel a firm approach to enforcement will result in the greatest benefit to all. Graduated account restriction will be used to enforce this policy. Each failure to comply will result in account restriction from rooms 1000, 1014 & 1032 as follows:

1st offense 3 days
2nd offense 7 days
3rd offense permanent

Violators will be notified by e-mail regarding the period of their restriction.

Food and Drink Areas

Lounge areas (available 24/7) near the Map Library and the Social Science Encounters eatery may also be used.

Conditions of Use

SSCL's computing resources have been acquired, and are allocated to groups and individuals for specific academic purposes. In particular, any of the following is considered to be illegal:

  • To share, give, sell, or otherwise provide computing resources, supplies or services to any other individual or group.
  • To inspect, alter, delete, publish, or otherwise tamper with files that you are not authorized to access.
  • To engage in any action which denies or restricts the use of computing facilities to other authorized users of those facilities.
  • To copy any proprietary software by any means.
  • To install personal software on the computers in public computer labs.

Failure to adhere to these stipulations will result in immediate termination of your account.
