Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories – Chloe Detta

By Diana Corredor
Chloe DettaIn our Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories series, we continue to spotlight students whose academic journeys inspire and reflect the spirit of the Faculty of Social Science. This edition features Chloe Detta, a third-year student in the Honours Double Major in Criminology and Sociology program.

Detta’s path in the social sciences began with a moment of clarity in SOC 2266: Crime and Society, taught by Dr. Kobayashi. “At the time, I was torn between continuing with criminology or switching into health sciences,” she recalls. “But from the very first lecture, I was hooked. One day, I remember not wanting class to end—I was that engaged.” The course became a turning point, affirming her passion and setting the tone for her academic future. “Looking back, it truly became the foundation of my academic journey.”

Detta’s university experience has been shaped not only by her coursework but also by her deep involvement in student life. As a member of several campus organizations—including the Western Pre-Law Society, Western Women in Fitness, and Western Women in Leadership—she found community and connection. Her involvement in the Criminology Students’ Society, in particular, stands out. Starting as a general member, she later served as AVP Communications and is now preparing to take on the role of President in the upcoming academic year. “What started as just wanting to get more involved has turned into one of the most rewarding parts of my time at Western,” she says. “I’m excited to see what next year brings.”

A first-generation university student, Detta understands the challenges of navigating a new academic world without a roadmap. “It was both exciting and overwhelming,” she shares. “But the Faculty of Social Science made a huge difference. Whenever I needed guidance or support, there were always people and resources there to help.” She encourages prospective students to take that leap. “You’ll be part of an incredibly supportive community, surrounded by passionate professors and peers who want to see you succeed.”

This summer, Detta is taking her academic interests even further through the Undergraduate Summer Research Internship (USRI), awarded by the Faculty of Social Science. Under the mentorship of Dr. Kobayashi, she’s leading an independent research project examining how media portrayals of sentencing outcomes influence public perceptions of justice—particularly the balance between punitive and rehabilitative approaches. “It’s an incredible opportunity to build research skills and dig deeper into the questions that drive my curiosity,” she explains. “I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received and excited to explore where this project will lead.”

Chloe Detta’s journey is a testament to what’s possible when passion, community, and opportunity come together. Her story reflects the essence of the student experience at Western: academically rigorous, personally meaningful, and filled with growth at every turn.
