Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories – Jack Luck
By Diana CorredorIn our Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories series, we continue to highlight students whose academic journeys showcase the diverse opportunities within the Faculty of Social Science at Western University. This edition features Jack Luck, an Honours Specialization student in Political Science, whose passion for politics and leadership has shaped an inspiring university experience.
Luck’s decision to study Political Science stemmed from a lifelong interest in following, studying, and analyzing politics. "If I’m going to study something for four years, it should be something I really enjoy!" he shares. Western’s Political Science Department, known for its academic excellence and diverse course offerings, proved to be the perfect fit. "I have been able to study so many interesting topics and expand my knowledge beyond what I previously thought possible. I’m just as excited about my classes today as I was in my first year!"
One of the most impactful aspects of Luck’s academic journey has been his involvement with Western’s Leadership and Democracy Lab, a research initiative that produces political risk assessment reports for business and government. As a research analyst, he has contributed to insightful projects, including a report on cybersecurity in Canadian elections infrastructure and another on the Taiwanese semiconductor industry and geopolitical risks. "Being a part of the lab has developed my practical research and writing skills and given me the opportunity to have my work published—which is pretty cool!"
Beyond academics, Luck has found a second home in Western’s Orientation Program. Since his second year, he has served as a Faculty Soph for Social Science students, and this past year, he took on the role of Head Soph for the faculty’s team. "Sophing has given me a community that has become like a family and allowed me to give back to my faculty in ways I couldn’t have imagined. Supporting incoming Social Science students as they transition into university has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life."
Luck’s story is a testament to the supportive and dynamic community within the Faculty of Social Science. Despite being the largest faculty on campus, Social Science fosters an environment where students feel valued and supported. "There are so many incredible supports—from Faculty Sophs for first-years to Academic Counselling and the Social Science Students’ Council—that help students succeed academically and socially."
Reflecting on his time at Western, Luck encourages prospective students to embrace all that the Faculty of Social Science has to offer. "One thing I would say to someone considering Social Science at Western is that you will find your place here. Whether it’s in academics, student leadership, research, or clubs, there are so many ways to connect with like-minded individuals and grow as a person. I know I did!"
Celebrate Jack Luck’s inspiring journey with us and explore the opportunities waiting for you in the Faculty of Social Science. Stay tuned for more success stories in our series!
