This edition introduces Rojina Farnaghi, a third-year Honours Political Science student whose journey is defined by purpose and community engagement.

Farnaghi chose Political Science out of a genuine interest in governance, law, and public policy. “I’ve always been passionate about understanding how political institutions operate and influence society,” she shares. Western’s program stood out for its strong foundation in critical thinking, research, and policy analysis—skills that align closely with her aspirations for a future in law or public service.

But Farnaghi’s experience has extended far beyond the classroom. As the Political Science Department Representative on the Social Science Students’ Council, she’s played a key role in student advocacy and event planning, including organizing Legally Linked: Law & Politics Networking Night, which brought together students, professors, lawyers, and law students for meaningful conversation about career paths. Her election as a Social Science Councillor for the upcoming year reflects her continued dedication to student representation.

In addition to her council roles, Farnaghi has held leadership positions across several student organizations. As VP of Communications for Women in Politics, she led marketing and outreach efforts to promote dialogue on gender and political participation. She’s also contributed to the Cancer Awareness Society, the Mooting Society, and the USC Charity Club, gaining hands-on experience in fundraising, advocacy, and community-building.

“The Political Science Department and the broader Social Science Faculty foster an incredibly supportive and collaborative environment,” she says. “Whether it’s collaborating on research, preparing for internships, or running for student positions, there’s always a sense of encouragement and mutual support.”

When asked what advice she would give to incoming students, Farnaghi doesn’t hesitate: “Get involved early! Whether it’s through student government, clubs, or mentorship programs, the opportunities for growth are everywhere. Don’t be afraid to take on leadership roles, ask questions, and connect with professors and peers—you never know where those conversations might lead.”

Farnaghi’s story is one of initiative, service, and community impact. She is a shining example of how students can shape their academic journeys through involvement, leadership, and a deep commitment to making a difference.
