Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories – Sahil Sherzai

By Diana Corredor
Sahil SherzaiIn our Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories series, we continue to highlight exceptional individuals who embody the dynamic, student-centred spirit of the Faculty of Social Science. This edition features Sahil Sherzai, a third-year student pursuing an Honours Specialization in Political Science.

Sherzai’s journey is rooted in a deep, longstanding interest in politics and governance. “What really drew me to my program is my passion for Political Science,” he shares. “I’ve always been interested in it, and the Faculty of Social Science has gone out of its way to make many courses accessible to us, along with providing lots of internship opportunities.”

That combination of academic flexibility and experiential learning has shaped Sherzai’s undergraduate experience. A standout moment came during his second year, when he participated in the Model EU hosted at York University and the Hungarian Consulate — an opportunity made possible through the Political Science program and the guidance of Professor Morrison. “Events like that — and so many panels hosted with executives from government, business, and academia — really bring learning to life,” he explains. “They give us a chance to engage directly, ask questions, and build real connections.”

Sherzai’s curiosity and drive have also taken him beyond the classroom. He has contributed to a number of interdisciplinary research projects across Political Science, Geography & Environment, and Arts & Humanities. Among them, a major highlight has been his work as a Research Assistant on the Canadian Municipal Attributes Portal (CMAP), led by Professors Horak and Taylor. “This project was groundbreaking — it’s the only resource of its kind in Canada designed to inform policymakers at all levels. It really sharpened my analytical skills and taught me how to work efficiently with tools like Excel.”

Sherzai’s leadership extends into campus life, where he is one of the Co-Founders and Co-President of the Afghan Cultural Club (ACC) at Western. This student group, which recently received official ratification from the University Students’ Council, offers a space for Afghan students to celebrate and share their heritage through food, storytelling, and community events. “It’s been incredibly meaningful to lead a talented executive team and help create spaces for people to connect with their culture and each other.”

Support has been a recurring theme in Sherzai’s time at Western — from faculty and staff, to his fellow students. “The Professors, Teaching Assistants, and administrative staff are all looking out for you,” he says. “A win for you is also a win for them.” He’s found community in every corner of the Social Science experience — from quiet spaces for group work to student-organized galas that offer connection and a break from the busy pace of university life. “Political Science here feels like a big friend group,” Sherzai reflects. “Everyone is here to learn, grow, and enjoy the journey together.”
