Western Social Science ranked 84 in the QS University Rankings, an increase of 64 spots in five years

Western Social Science ranked among top 100 in the world

The reputation of Social Science at Western University is once again ranked as one of the top 100 in the world.

Social Science at Western is ranked number 84 in the 2019 QS University Rankings, surpassing 64 other institutions since 2015.

In Canada, only the University of Toronto, the University of British Columbia and McGill University are ranked higher than Western in social science research.

“This was only possible because of the commitment of our staff and faculty to our strategic initiatives,” said Bob Andersen, Dean of the Faculty of Social Science. “Their hard work and dedication has made the difference. Congratulations everyone.”

Among the individual ranking indicators, Social Science is ranked first in Canada for citations per paper (15th in the world), fourth in Canada (95th in the world) for reputation among employers, fifth in Canada (151st in the world) for academic reputation, and sixth in Canada on citations according to the H-index score (82nd in the world).

Rankings for individual departments highlighted the diverse strength of the faculty:

Economics was among the top 4 in Canada;
• Economics was ranked third in citations per paper, and fourth for employer reputation among Canadian universities
Psychology was ranked in the top 5 in Canada;
• Psychology was also ranked second in citations per paper, worldwide;
History and Sociology were ranked in the top 10 in Canada.

“As we welcome our recently hired faculty members, we expect these rankings will continue to improve,” said Andersen. “We’re not done yet!”
