Message from the Dean
"Welcome to Social Science! An education in Social Science gives you something powerful: the ability to understand a rapidly changing world and to navigate it with confidence, curiosity, and purpose. In a global environment shaped by innovation, uncertainty, and constant transformation, adaptability is essential and that’s exactly what Social Science helps you build. In our Faculty, you’ll develop strong analytical and critical thinking skills through coursework, hands on learning, and extracurricular experiences. You’ll learn to ask meaningful questions, evaluate evidence, communicate clearly, and defend your ideas. You’ll also strengthen the transferable skills that employers consistently value: teamwork, organization, leadership, data analysis, strong communication skills and an appreciation for the diversity of people and cultures. But Social Science is more than a set of skills—it’s a way of seeing the world. Social scientists tackle some of humanity’s biggest questions and most urgent challenges. Climate change, pandemics, political polarization, misinformation, inequality—these are not only scientific or technical problems. They are social problems that require an understanding of human behaviour, cultural context, institutions, and relationships. Natural sciences can tell us what is happening; Social Science helps us understand why it matters and how to respond in ways that work for societies. Our courses give you the tools to make sense of complex issues, to recognize how local events connect to global consequences, and to make informed choices in a world overflowing with information. You’ll learn to analyze problems from multiple angles, consider the human impact of solutions, and approach challenges with empathy and insight. These abilities prepare you for meaningful careers in business, law, government, NGOs, technology, education, and beyond—paths our alumni have taken with great success. Your time in the Faculty of Social Science isn’t just about academics. It’s about joining a vibrant community where you can explore new interests, challenge assumptions, build friendships, and discover what matters to you. I encourage you to seek out opportunities to grow personally through participation in student clubs, events, or develop your own initiatives. We strive to provide you with a welcoming and respectful space to grow personally as well as intellectually. Enjoy your journey in Social Science!" - James Voogt, Acting Dean, Faculty of Social Science
