Addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals in the Faculty of Social Science

At Western’s Faculty of Social Science, we believe research, teaching, and community engagement can change the world. As one of the most diverse and dynamic faculties in Canada, we are proud to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—a global call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure peace and prosperity for all.

Our faculty is home to leaders in research and education who explore how societies work, how people connect, and how communities can thrive. From tackling inequality and improving health and well-being, to advancing climate action and building inclusive institutions, our scholars are creating knowledge that inspires meaningful change.

A Faculty Driving Impact Across Disciplines

Each of our departments and programs plays a role in addressing the SDGs through innovative teaching, impactful research, and partnerships that reach across borders:

Examining human culture and resilience in the face of global challenges.
Shaping ethical leaders for sustainable business and responsible economic growth.
Advancing solutions for poverty reduction, inequality, and sustainable markets.
Exploring climate change, urban sustainability, and resource management.
Uncovering lessons from the past to inform peace, justice, and global cooperation.
Strengthening democratic institutions and governance for more inclusive societies.
Improving mental health, well-being, and human development across diverse communities.
Addressing issues of inequality, migration, and social change at local and global levels.

Master of Financial Economics, Master of Management of Applied Science, and Master of Public Administration (Local Government)

Equipping students with the knowledge and skills to apply social science research to real-world challenges.

Acting Locally, Impacting Globally

Whether it’s collaborating with community organizations in London, shaping national policies, or partnering with researchers across the globe, our work connects local action with global impact. By addressing the SDGs, the Faculty of Social Science is preparing students and researchers to become agents of change—people who will help build a more sustainable, inclusive, and just world.
