Economic Policy Research Institute
The Institute and its People
The Economic Policy Research Institute (EPRI) was founded in 2001 with a $750,000 donation from the RBC Financial Group. It is a joint enterprise of the departments of Economics and Political Science. The Executive Director of the Institute is Jim Davies, from the Department of Economics. Jim MacGee, Chris Robinson, John Whalley and Robert Young serve as Co-Directors.
The goal of the Institute is to foster research at UWO on long-term economic policy issues. It does so through its support for policy-oriented research in the two departments; through seminar series, working papers and conferences; and through outreach to external researchers, policy-makers and the public.
The Institute has five key research areas:
- Climate and the Economy
- Money and Finance
- China and India in the Global Economy
- Political Economy
- Human Capital and Labor Markets
These areas are coordinated by Jim Davies (Climate and the Economy), Jim MacGee (Money and Finance), Chris Robinson (Human Capital and Labor Markets), John Whalley (China and India), and Robert Young (Political Economy).
Affiliated with the Institute are the Centre for Research on International Economic Relations (CSIER), interdisciplinary groups that are centred in the Department of Economics, and the Political Economy Research Group (PERG), which is joint between Economics and Political Science. The directors of these groups are John Whalley (CSIER) and Robert Young (PERG).
The Board of Directors of the Institute is responsible for general policies regarding its operation. It is chaired by UWO's Vice-President (Research), and includes the Dean of Social Science, the Chairs of Economics and Political Science, the Chair of the Institute's Advisory Council, the Executive Director and Co-Directors and two representatives of the Fellows of the Institute. Procedures for appointing the Advisory Council and the Fellows are described in the Institute's Constitution, which was approved by the UWO Board of Governors on May 3, 2001. Fellows must be members of the departments of Economics or Political Science at UWO. Outside researchers may be appointed as Research Associates of the Institute.
