Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories | Eiman Rizwan
In our Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories series, we proudly highlight students whose experiences demonstrate how curiosity, leadership, and determination can create meaningful opportunities for growth. This edition features Eiman Rizwan, an Honours Specialization in Political Science graduate and incoming Master of Arts in Political Science student at Western University.
For Rizwan, studying Political Science was driven by a desire to understand the forces that shape society and improve people's lives. "I've always believed that politics has the power to shape every aspect of people's lives, for better or for worse," she says. "From an early age, I found myself questioning why certain systems create opportunities for some while leaving others behind, and I wanted to better understand how meaningful change happens."
Those questions became the foundation of her academic journey. Through courses exploring public policy, governance, and international affairs, Rizwan developed a deeper understanding of the political systems that influence communities around the world while strengthening the critical-thinking skills needed to analyze complex issues from multiple perspectives.
"The Faculty of Social Science strengthened my research, analytical, writing, and communication skills while encouraging me to think critically about complex political issues," she explains. "Those experiences confirmed my interest in pursuing a career in public policy and international affairs and gave me the foundation to continue my studies in Western's Master of Arts in Political Science program this fall."
While academics played an important role in her experience, Rizwan believes some of her most valuable lessons came from stepping beyond the classroom. Passionate about bringing students together across disciplines, she founded and served as president of the Interdisciplinary Innovations Club, creating opportunities for students from diverse academic backgrounds to collaborate, exchange ideas, and learn from one another.
"One of the most rewarding parts of my time at Western was getting involved outside of the classroom," she says. "Creating a space where students from different disciplines could collaborate showed me the value of diverse perspectives and strengthened my leadership skills."
Rizwan also gave back to the Western community as a Digital Peer Leader, supporting incoming students as they adjusted to university life. By helping new students navigate campus resources and build confidence during their transition, she developed meaningful connections while fostering a welcoming environment for others.
These leadership experiences complemented what she learned in the classroom, helping her build confidence in communication, collaboration, and problem-solving while preparing her for future opportunities in public service and graduate studies.
Looking back on her undergraduate experience, Rizwan encourages prospective students to embrace every opportunity available to them, even those that may seem outside their comfort zone.
"Don't be afraid to get involved beyond the classroom," she says. "Some of my most valuable experiences came from student leadership, connecting with professors, volunteering, and saying yes to opportunities that initially felt intimidating."
She believes the Faculty of Social Science offers students countless ways to grow academically, professionally, and personally, but emphasizes that making the most of those opportunities begins with taking the first step.
"The Faculty of Social Science provides countless ways to grow academically and professionally, but it's up to you to take advantage of them," Rizwan says. "Chase your dreams because if you want it, it's already yours."
As she prepares to begin her Master's degree in Political Science at Western, Rizwan reflects the impact of combining academic curiosity with leadership and community engagement. Her journey demonstrates how asking meaningful questions, embracing new experiences, and investing in others can create opportunities that extend far beyond graduation.
