Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories | Felix Amyot

Felix AmyotIn our Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories series, we continue to highlight remarkable individuals whose journeys reflect the heart of the Faculty of Social Science. This edition features Felix Amyot, a third-year student in Business Management & Organizational Studies with a Minor in Sociology—an unexpected academic pairing that has shaped his perspective in powerful ways.

When Amyot arrived at Western in first year, his plan was simple: pursue a business degree and stay firmly on that path. But everything changed when he enrolled in Sociology 1027 and 1029. Those courses opened a new window into understanding the world—one rooted in empathy, critical thinking, and the ability to examine situations from multiple angles.

“I realized how much I enjoyed looking at the world through the lens of a sociologist,” he reflects. For Amyot, discovering sociology didn’t replace business—it expanded it. The interdisciplinary approach of Social Science helped him appreciate different teaching styles and broaden his academic outlook, making him a more analytical, well-rounded student. “Without Social Science’s interdisciplinary approach, I wouldn’t have found my love for sociology.”

Throughout his time at Western, Amyot has also experienced the strength of the Faculty’s support network. He shares that the Social Science academic advisors have played a significant role in his academic journey—especially Lisa Metselaar, whom Amyot affectionately calls his “go-to gal.” Whether it’s choosing classes, navigating exam conflicts, or connecting with campus resources, she has been a reliable source of guidance.

Support extended beyond academics as well. After facing personal challenges this past summer, Amyot reached out to a mental health counsellor through the University. “He was incredibly helpful, and it was amazing how quickly he was able to work with me,” he says. While he jokingly hopes he won’t need frequent appointments, knowing there are compassionate professionals ready to help brings him a sense of reassurance.

One of the most meaningful relationships Amyot has built at Western is with his first-year professor, PJ, who taught his 1220 course. What began as a student–professor connection has grown into a strong mentorship rooted in kindness and wisdom. Amyot recalls the day he was rejected by Ivey—an emotional moment when he feared disappointing those who believed in him. Instead, PJ reminded him of his talent and potential, helping him regain confidence. That setback became an opportunity: Amyot poured his energy into Social Science, returning as a Soph and becoming the Finance Director for Western’s Environmental Business Club (WEB).

Outside the classroom, Amyot is deeply engaged in student life. From intramural sports to leadership roles in WEB, he thrives in collaborative, community-oriented environments. But among all his activities, sophing stands out as his favourite. As a Social Science Soph, he helps first-year students feel welcomed, supported, and connected. “Our main job is building community,” he says—and for Amyot, that mission has been life-changing. The soph team has become a constant presence in his life, and next year, he’ll continue that impact as part of the Head Soph Team.

In what he calls “the corniest way possible,” Amyot says his biggest achievement at Western isn’t an award or a position—it’s the friendships he has formed. Coming from Chicago, knowing only his older brother, he had to rebuild his social world from the ground up. But Western quickly became home. From classmates to club leaders to fellow Sophs, people have consistently shown up for him—academically, professionally, and personally.

“I truly feel like I’ve got a second family here,” he says. “People have been beyond supportive, and it inspires me every day.”

Amyot’s story is a reminder that university is not only about academics—it’s about community, growth, resilience, and the people who walk alongside us. His journey illustrates the transformative power of connection, interdisciplinary learning, and the courage to explore new paths.
