Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories | Joey Mocnik

When Mocnik arrived at Western from Vancouver, he was stepping into an entirely new chapter of his life. Determined to make the most of the experience, he immersed himself in academics, athletics, and campus leadership. Looking back, he credits much of his personal and professional growth to the people who believed in him at every stage of his journey.

“There wasn’t one professor who shaped me,” Mocnik says. “There was someone at every stage of my journey, especially when I needed it most.”

During moments of self-doubt, Cam Brown and Jess Orchin provided encouragement that helped him regain confidence in his abilities. Through one-on-one conversations, they reminded him of his determination and potential when he struggled to see it himself.

“They helped me believe in myself again when I couldn’t do it on my own,” he says.

In his final year, Dan Bousfield encouraged Mocnik to trust his own perspective and bring his experiences confidently into classroom discussions. Rather than holding back, he learned that his unique viewpoint added value to conversations and strengthened his academic voice.

“He encouraged me not to get flustered or give up and made me feel that the way I looked at things brought something genuinely valuable to the conversation,” Mocnik says. “That guidance has stayed with me.”

Beyond the classroom, Western became a place where Mocnik discovered the importance of community. His university experience was shaped by three defining roles: competing on the Western Mustangs football team, serving as Vice-President of the Mustangs Athlete Student Council, and mentoring new students through the Western Peer Leaders program.

Playing for the Mustangs over five years taught him resilience, discipline, and leadership, while unforgettable moments—such as running onto the field during Homecoming and competing in his senior game—remain among his most cherished memories. Yet, for Mocnik, being a Mustang meant more than wearing the jersey.

“Western taught me that it’s about far more than a degree,” he says. “It’s about becoming part of something bigger than yourself.”

His commitment to giving back inspired him to take on leadership opportunities that strengthened the campus community. As Vice-President of the Mustangs Athlete Student Council, Mocnik helped organize Student Days, an initiative that welcomed local elementary school students to campus to experience varsity athletics. Watching young students cheer enthusiastically from the stands—and hearing student-athletes express how meaningful it was to compete before one of the largest crowds they had experienced—reinforced his belief that leadership is about creating opportunities for others.

“To me, leadership was never about a title,” he says. “It was about creating opportunities for others.”

As a Western Peer Leader, Mocnik also supported first-year students as they navigated the transition to university. Drawing from his own experiences, he encouraged them to see university as more than an academic pursuit.

“I reminded them that university is about discovering who you are, not just academics,” he says. “If my leadership helped even one student feel more connected or confident, I know it mattered.”

Reflecting on his time at Western, Mocnik considers his greatest achievement not to be a single award or accomplishment, but the person he became throughout his five years at the university.

Receiving his graduation ring marked an especially emotional milestone, symbolizing years of growth, leadership, friendships, and unforgettable experiences.

“I didn’t just graduate,” he says. “I became a Mustang for life.”

For prospective students considering the Faculty of Social Science, Mocnik encourages them to embrace every opportunity with curiosity and an open mind.

“One of the best parts of the Faculty of Social Science is the freedom to explore across disciplines,” he says. “Take the course that interests you. Talk to people whose experiences differ from yours. Some of my most valuable lessons came from stepping outside my comfort zone.”

Joey Mocnik’s journey is a testament to the lasting impact of mentorship, meaningful leadership, and an engaged campus community. Through the guidance of faculty, the support of his peers, and his commitment to serving others, he discovered that success is measured not only by academic achievement, but by the connections made, the confidence gained, and the legacy left behind.
