Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories | Kate Knapp

Kate KnappIn our Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories series, we proudly highlight students whose experiences reflect the transformative impact of education, leadership, and community. This edition features Kate Knapp, a third-year student in the DAN Management and Organizational Studies (MOS) program at Western University.

Knapp chose the MOS program because it provided the flexibility to explore different areas of business while discovering where her true interests lie. “I came to Western with a liking for business, but no clear path that interested me,” she explains. “The MOS program has allowed me to explore and discover what my passions are.” The broad and adaptable nature of the program gave her the opportunity to gain insight into multiple aspects of business before moving into upper-year specialization opportunities.

Throughout her time in the Faculty of Social Science, Knapp has developed both technical knowledge and essential interpersonal skills that have prepared her for future professional success. “The Faculty of Social Science has not only taught me technical skills through its courses to further my professional career, but it has also provided opportunities to build my soft skills,” she says. “I have gained experience in time management, problem solving, and social networking, all highly transferable skills that are learned outside the classroom.”

Beyond academics, Knapp has embraced opportunities to become deeply involved in student life at Western. In her first year, she joined Western Women in Business, an experience that quickly became one of the highlights of her university journey. She later stepped into a leadership role as Director of Operations during her second year, further strengthening her professional and organizational skills. “WWIB has been one of my favourite university experiences and has allowed me to meet many like-minded individuals while also furthering my professional career,” Knapp shares. “Not only do clubs provide social interaction and events, but you truly meet an amazing group of friends along the way.”

Knapp also credits the faculty’s strong support systems for helping her navigate university life and plan for the future. She found Social Science Academic Advising especially valuable when selecting courses and mapping out her undergraduate experience. “It is evident that the advisors have my best interest in mind and will go above and beyond to accommodate or help anyone in need,” she says.

Reflecting on her experience, Knapp encourages future students to embrace the opportunities available within the Faculty of Social Science and remain open to discovering new interests. “There are so many positives, including great support systems, limitless opportunities to meet new people, and broad course offerings that allow you to explore your interests,” she notes. She also offers two important pieces of advice to incoming students: “Getting to know your professors will serve you well in the future, and don’t feel tied to the undergraduate degree you chose when applying to Western.”
