Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories | Meghna Dokka
In our Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories series, we proudly highlight exceptional students whose experiences reflect the opportunities, growth, and achievements that define the Faculty of Social Science. This edition features Meghna Dokka, a Bachelor of DAN Management and Organizational Studies (BMOS) student.
Dokka’s journey at Western began with a desire to find a program that offered both academic depth and flexibility. Drawn to the BMOS program’s balance of business fundamentals and specialization opportunities, she appreciated the ability to explore interests beyond business while pursuing her focus in accounting.
"When I was deciding on universities, I found Western’s BMOS program to be well balanced because it gave me the opportunity to explore different areas of business while also focusing on my specialization in accounting," says Dokka. "One aspect that really stood out to me was the flexibility to take courses outside of business, such as political science. This made my degree a more well-rounded and intellectually stimulating experience."
Throughout her time at Western, Dokka embraced challenging academic opportunities that helped shape her future career aspirations. One of the most impactful experiences came during her final year in MOS 4510, a preparatory course for the Graduate Diploma in Accounting. The course challenged her to think differently, strengthen her skills, and prepare for the next stage of her professional journey.
"The course had a significant impact on my academic journey, and my professor, Stacey Hann, was a huge influence," Dokka explains. "It was both challenging and humbling at the beginning, but Stacey’s advice really set us up for success. I was able to carry forward those lessons into the Graduate Diploma, where they continue to help me do well. Looking back, it was one of the most rewarding learning experiences of my time at Western."
Dokka credits much of her success to the dedicated faculty members who supported her academic and professional development. Through engaging classroom experiences and mentorship, she gained valuable insights into the accounting profession and the CPA pathway.
"I truly believe that a large part of my learning comes from the classroom, and I was fortunate to have instructors who are very effective in what they teach," she says. "Beyond coursework, they also provided valuable career advice, particularly around the CPA pathway. Many of them have gone through the same process themselves, which made their guidance helpful as I planned my own career path."
Beyond the classroom, Dokka found invaluable support through the BMOS academic advising team and Western’s international student advising services. Their guidance helped her navigate everything from course selection and enrolment questions to visa-related processes, allowing her to focus on making the most of her university experience.
"Both teams have always been patient with my many questions and requests, and I am very grateful for the support I have received," says Dokka.
Among her many accomplishments, Dokka considers one achievement particularly meaningful: moving from Dubai to Canada at just 17 years old and building a life for herself in a new country. Her determination, resilience, and commitment to her goals culminated in one of the proudest moments of her academic journey.
"I think my biggest achievement is moving to Canada from Dubai at 17 and building a life for myself here," she reflects. "It has been a journey with its share of ups and downs, but I am very grateful for how things have worked out so far and the relationships I have built along the way. Receiving the Gold Medal and seeing my parents’ happiness at convocation was a moment that meant a lot to me."
Dokka’s story demonstrates how determination, curiosity, and a strong support network can help students thrive both academically and personally. As she continues her journey toward a career in accounting, she carries forward the knowledge, experiences, and relationships she built at Western.
