Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories | Paige Wills

Wills’ academic journey demonstrates the value of exploring human behaviour through multiple perspectives. By combining Psychology and Sociology, she has developed a deeper understanding of both the individual and the broader social forces that shape people’s lives. "As an Honours Double Major in Psychology and Sociology, I developed an understanding of human behaviour through psychological research methods, while learning how social structures, policy, and social determinants of health shape people’s lives," she explains. "The flexibility of the program and its interdisciplinary approach to learning broadened my perspective and enhanced my critical thinking skills."

One of the most influential experiences in Wills’ academic career came through Psychology 3800F with Dr. Strang. What began as a challenging subject became an opportunity for tremendous personal and academic growth. "I found my time in the course to be a transformative experience, as not only did I build my quantitative skills, but also my confidence as a student," she says. "Mathematics had always been an area of challenge for me, so earning an A in an upper-year statistics course was never something I could have imagined when I first started university."

The course reinforced her confidence and demonstrated the impact that dedicated faculty can have on student success. "The guidance, support, and instruction I received in this course not only enhanced my statistical abilities but reinforced my belief that I can achieve whatever I set my mind to."

As she prepares for graduate studies, Wills credits the Faculty of Social Science with providing the strong foundation necessary for future academic pursuits. Through coursework and research opportunities, she developed valuable analytical skills and a deeper understanding of research methodology. "Western’s research-focused environment has left me feeling both scientifically literate and academically curious," she notes. "Through my coursework and research experiences, I developed the statistical maturity and understanding of research methodology needed to advance in my academic pursuits."

Outside the classroom, Wills has embraced opportunities to apply her knowledge in meaningful ways. During her final year, she served as a volunteer Research Assistant in a Cognitive Psychology laboratory and volunteered as a Ward Engagement volunteer at Parkwood Institute through St. Joseph’s Health Care London. These experiences allowed her to connect theory with practice while developing valuable professional skills.

"These experiences allowed me to extend my learning outside of the classroom while bringing practical experience back into my studies," Wills says. "By balancing hospital and research volunteering alongside academic responsibilities, I also learned how to manage multiple commitments, a skill I carry with me beyond graduation."

Reflecting on her time at Western, Wills encourages future students to embrace opportunities for growth and remain open to new possibilities. "I am a firm believer that it is never too late to get involved or change paths," she shares. "Whether you are just entering university or making a change later in your degree, the faculty, staff, and community will be there to support you every step of the way."
