Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories | Sebastian Coia

Sebastian CoiaIn our Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories series, we proudly highlight students whose dedication, resilience, and passion embody the spirit of the Faculty of Social Science. This edition features Sebastian Coia, a third-year Criminology student whose journey at Western University is a powerful example of growth through courage, connection, and community.

Coia’s passion for criminology was sparked in Sociology 2266: Crime and Society with Dr. Stephen Kleinknecht, a course that changed the trajectory of his academic path. “I uncovered a passion for criminology by taking this course, and it actually was the deciding factor in me switching from a Sociology module to a Criminology module,” he shares. “Dr. K’s teaching style was one of my favourites—he made three-hour lectures enjoyable and always took the time to support us, even after class.” That experience ignited Coia’s curiosity about the social and psychological factors that drive criminal behaviour and deepened his appreciation for the complexity of crime in society.

As a transfer student, Coia’s transition to Western was guided by the steady support of Academic Advising. “They were always there for me throughout the entire process, no matter how many questions I asked,” he says. “Their help made my transition to Western as smooth as it could have possibly gone.” That encouragement gave him the confidence to build a new chapter at Western—one that would soon be filled with leadership, involvement, and meaningful friendships.

This year, Coia’s impact across campus is remarkable. As a Faculty Soph for the Social Science Faculty, he supported first-year students through their own transitions, finding purpose in giving back to others who might be facing the same uncertainties he once did. He also serves as a Promotions Executive for the Spur Fashion Show, where his passion for social media and marketing thrives among a community of creative thinkers. Most recently, he took on the role of Vice President of Partnerships for Bags of Promise UWO, a charitable organization supporting underprivileged youth in London—a position that pushed him outside his comfort zone and allowed him to make a tangible impact in the local community.

Within the Faculty, Coia is also an active member of the Social Science Students’ Council, serving as a Social Events Commissioner. “Working with the Council has allowed me to plan and run events that are truly for the enjoyment of students,” he explains. From workout classes to social nights, these experiences have deepened his sense of belonging and strengthened his commitment to the Social Science community.

Looking back, transferring to Western stands as one of Coia’s proudest achievements. “I was terrified to leave a comfortable environment where I knew everyone,” he reflects. “But I knew my current situation wasn’t right for me. Transferring to Western was one of the scariest, yet most rewarding, decisions I’ve ever made.” His story is a reminder that growth often begins when we step into the unknown.

Coia’s journey demonstrates how courage, community, and curiosity can shape a truly transformative university experience. His story inspires others to explore every opportunity Western has to offer—and to discover, as he did, that the Social Science Faculty is more than a place to learn; it’s a place to belong.
