Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories | Soumya Ananth
In our Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories series, we proudly highlight students whose passion, leadership, and commitment to community help shape the Faculty of Social Science experience. This edition features Soumya Ananth, a second-year Political Science student preparing to enter her third year at Western University.
For Ananth, university has been about much more than academics. Through leadership roles, community involvement, and a dedication to supporting her peers, she has discovered the power of creating meaningful connections and making a positive impact on campus.
One of Ananth’s most rewarding experiences has been serving as the Charity Events Commissioner with the Social Science Students’ Council (SSSC). Drawn to the role by a desire to contribute to the Western community, she worked alongside fellow student leaders to organize initiatives focused on mental health awareness and community engagement.
"I was drawn to the role because of my desire to create a positive and lasting impact within the Western community," says Ananth. "Throughout the year, I helped organize events focused on mental health awareness and community engagement, bringing students together around important causes."
The experience allowed her to strengthen her leadership and collaboration skills while forming meaningful relationships with students across the Faculty. More importantly, it helped foster a deep sense of connection and belonging.
"Most importantly, it gave me a strong sense of belonging and made me feel connected to something larger than myself at Western," she reflects.
That sense of community is one of the defining aspects of Ananth’s experience in the Faculty of Social Science. Through her involvement in faculty events, student leadership opportunities, and campus initiatives, she has experienced firsthand the supportive environment that helps students thrive.
"What stands out most is how willing students are to support one another, not only academically but personally as well," says Ananth. "People take the time to celebrate each other's achievements, check in during challenging times, and encourage one another to pursue opportunities that help them grow."
As both an active member of the Social Science Students’ Council and a Social Science Soph, Ananth has witnessed students coming together to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone feels valued.
"Seeing so many students seamlessly balance academics, leadership, friendships, and personal growth has inspired me to do the same," she says.
Another transformative experience for Ananth has been her role as a Residence Soph for Clare Hall. Supporting first-year students as they adjusted to university life allowed her to develop meaningful relationships while helping build a strong and welcoming residence community.
"Through planning events, mentoring students, and being a source of support, I saw firsthand how important it is for students to feel a sense of belonging," Ananth explains.
The experience left a lasting impression and inspired her to continue supporting new students as a Social Science Soph this year.
"The sense of community, support, and belonging I found through my involvement at Western has shaped my own journey, and I am excited to help create those same experiences for others," she says.
As she looks ahead to her third year, Ananth encourages students to make the most of the opportunities available to them within the Faculty of Social Science and across campus.
"Join clubs, attend events, meet new people, and don't be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone. You never know where those opportunities might lead," she advises. "Some of the most meaningful parts of my university experience have come from getting involved and building connections with others in the faculty."
She also reminds students that seeking support is an important part of success.
"Whether that's from professors, peers, or faculty staff, there is always someone willing to support you," says Ananth. "Most importantly, stay passionate, be creative, and remain authentic to who you are; those qualities will help you make the most of your time at Western."
