Thomas HornIn our Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories series, we highlight exceptional graduates whose academic journeys reflect dedication, curiosity, and the transformative power of learning within the Faculty of Social Science at Western University. This edition features Thomas Horn, a graduate of the BMOS Honours Commercial Aviation Management program.

From an early fascination with airports to a purposeful academic path, Horn’s decision to pursue Commercial Aviation Management was shaped by both passion and perspective. “What drew me to the Commercial Aviation Management program came down to two factors: my love for airports as a kid, and the uniqueness of the program, particularly the non-flight option,” Horn shares. That blend of personal interest and academic distinctiveness became the foundation for a meaningful university experience.

Throughout his studies, Horn found particular impact in courses that connected theory to real-world aviation challenges. One experience stood out in particular. “The most impactful course I took was Aviation Law. It was designed around real-life scenarios relevant to the aviation industry, and it really pushed us to think in ways we hadn't before,” he explains. This applied learning approach helped him develop critical thinking skills directly aligned with the complexity of the aviation sector.

Horn reflects positively on the Faculty of Social Science and the CAM program for preparing him for life after graduation. “I feel that the Faculty of Social Science, and specifically the CAM program, has thoroughly prepared me for my future career. The course content exceeded my expectations, with subject matter experts delivering the material themselves. Western has made me very confident stepping into the next chapter of my life,” he says. This confidence, built through expert instruction and practical learning, has been a defining outcome of his time at Western.

Mentorship also played a meaningful role in his academic journey. Horn highlights the influence of supportive faculty who invested in student success. “I have received incredible mentorship from many professors who genuinely care about their students. The professor who helped me most was Harvey Geraint. Taking Harvey's HR class on a whim turned out to be one of my best decisions. He engaged with each and every student and took time out of his day to support myself and others with our ongoing career goals,” he shares.

Beyond the classroom, Horn expanded his university experience through his work at the Western Student Recreation Centre. “In my final year of undergrad, I started working at the Western Student Recreation Centre. Through that role, I met some of my closest friends, built great memories, and found a strong support system. I never thought I could balance work and academics simultaneously, but the two almost felt complementary,” he reflects.

Among his many accomplishments, Horn identifies a major academic milestone that stands out above the rest. “My biggest achievement at Western was winning the Gold Medal for academics in my program specialization. The past four years were not without challenges, but I was committed to learning as much as I could, and that dedication paid off,” he says.

Thomas Horn’s journey reflects a powerful combination of passion, perseverance, and academic excellence. His story highlights how the Commercial Aviation Management program equips students with both the knowledge and confidence to step into their future with purpose.
