Veer KaranIn our Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories series, we proudly highlight students whose academic journeys have helped shape their goals, strengthen their skills, and prepare them for meaningful careers. This edition features Veer Karan, a BMOS student specializing in Finance in the Faculty of Social Science at Western University.

For Karan, choosing a university program was never about narrowing his options too soon. Instead, he wanted an education that would allow him to explore a wide range of business disciplines while building expertise in areas that interested him most.

"I wanted a program that gave me breadth without sacrificing depth," he explains. "BMOS was the perfect fit because it let me explore accounting, finance, economics, and business all at once."

Karan was drawn to the flexibility of the program and the opportunity to develop a broad understanding of how organizations operate. A quote that has long resonated with him helped shape his decision: "A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one." Rather than specializing immediately, he wanted to see how different areas of business connect and influence one another.

"I didn't want to box myself in early," he says. "I wanted to understand how different business functions connect, and BMOS gave me exactly that foundation."

As he progressed through his studies, one course in particular helped clarify his future direction. MOS 3311: Advanced Finance became a defining moment in his academic journey, not only because of the subject matter but also because of the support he received from his professor.

"My professor was great," Karan recalls. "Even though I didn't do too well on the midterm, she was very supportive and pushed me to excel in my final."

The experience challenged him academically while reinforcing his growing interest in finance. More importantly, it helped him see the field as a potential long-term career path.

"It was the course that confirmed finance is something I genuinely want to build a career in," he says. "It deepened my understanding of how finance functions as the backbone of any organization and pushed me to pursue the CFA designation alongside my degree."

For Karan, the course represented more than an academic requirement. It provided clarity about where he wanted to focus his energy and ambitions moving forward.

"That course didn't just teach me concepts," he says. "It gave me direction."

Like many students, Karan discovered that success at university is often supported by the people and resources available along the way. As an international student adapting to a new academic environment, he found valuable guidance through both Academic Advising and the International Student Advising Office.

"Every interaction felt smooth and genuinely supportive," he says. "They were not just processing requests; they actually wanted the best outcome for you."

Navigating university life in a new country can be challenging, but Karan found reassurance in knowing there were dedicated professionals ready to help when needed.

"As an international student navigating a new system, having that kind of accessible, caring support made a real difference."

Beyond formal support services, Karan credits much of his academic growth to the professors who encouraged him throughout his time at Western. Their high expectations and willingness to help students succeed motivated him to continually improve.

"My professors were consistently approachable and invested in student success," he says. "They were clear about what it takes to perform well and pushed you to aim higher."

That mentorship contributed directly to his academic achievements. Through consistent effort and a commitment to improvement, Karan earned a place on the Dean's Honour List and steadily increased his academic average year after year.

"Having professors who hold you to a high standard is something I didn't expect but am genuinely grateful for," he says.

Looking back on his university experience, Karan sees growth not only in his academic accomplishments but also in the person he has become. While his studies provided knowledge and technical skills, they also helped him develop discipline, focus, and a stronger sense of purpose.

"Western made me more career-focused and showed me that consistent effort compounds over time," he reflects.

Each year brought greater confidence, improved results, and a clearer understanding of his professional aspirations. What began as a broad interest in business gradually evolved into a focused commitment to a future in finance.

"I came in curious and broad-minded, and I am leaving with a clear path in finance and a much stronger work ethic," he says.

For Karan, the most significant transformation happened internally.

"The biggest shift was internal," he explains. "I stopped coasting and started building."

Veer Karan's journey demonstrates how curiosity, perseverance, and a willingness to embrace new opportunities can shape both academic success and personal growth. Through supportive mentors, valuable campus resources, and a commitment to continuous improvement, he transformed uncertainty into direction and ambition into action. His story serves as a reminder that success is often built one step at a time—and that growth comes from challenging yourself to keep moving forward.
