Application Process

Before students are admitted to the Social Science Co-op Program they must complete the following steps:

  • Wednesday, September 23, 2026 at 4:30pm in the Weldon Community Room
  • Thursday, October 8, 2026 at 12:00pm in the Weldon Community Room
  • Wednesday, October 14, 2026 at 5:00pm (Virtual)

Register on Western Connect by completing the “Social Science Co-op Program” application form. 

Deadline: October 26, 2026

Only students who satisfy the Social Science Co-op Program’s Eligibility Criteria will be approved and granted access to the Co-op Portal. 

All applications will be reviewed by November 1st.

Returning students: If you have been approved for the program in previous years, you may not have access to the application form. Please email sscoop@uwo.ca to request renewed access.

 Apply to a Program

All approved students must attend a Resume & Cover letter workshop and submit their resume for review by the deadline to continue in the program.

Once you've received feedback, you will be encouraged to tailor each application package that you submit to employers. You will continue to have access to feedback from the Social Science Internship Program team on your individual applications throughout the recruitment season.

Fall 2026 (Regular admission)

Workshop dates (Approved students will receive registration details):

  • Thursday, October 29, 2026 at 5:00pm 
  • Thursday, November 5, 2026 at 5:00pm 
  • Thursday, November 12, 2026 at 5:00pm

Resume submission deadline: Sunday, November 22nd at 11:59PM EST.

All students must complete a resume and submit for review by the deadline and receive feedback by Friday, December 11, 2026.

You are encouraged to tailor each application package that you submit to employers. For feedback on cover letters and applications, you will continue to have access to the career services and co-op team input throughout the year!

International students can participate in a co-op experience if all of the following conditions are met, regardless of the timing and length of the co-op:

  1. They have a valid study permit or they have applied for a study permit extension before it expires.

  2. They have conditions printed on their current study permit which indicate they are allowed to work on campus.

  3. They are enrolled as a full-time student at Western University.

  4. The co-op totals less than 50% of their program of study.

  5. They have a letter from the Social Science Co-op Program which confirms the co-op is a requirement of their program of study.

Once international students have secured a co-op placement, they must email sscoop@uwo.ca to begin the process of formalizing their role for co-op credit. As part of this process, the Experiential Learning Coordinator, Social Science will schedule a meeting to verify points 1 & 2 from the above list. Provided that the first 4 points from the above list are true, the student will be provided with the letter outlined in point 5.

Students are strongly encouraged to review their study permit conditions before applying to the Social Science Co-op Program to ensure they meet eligibility requirements. Students who need to change their permit conditions or extend their study permit should begin the process several months in advance to avoid delays. Western’s International Student Services (ISS) team is available to help you in the application process! Please register for one of the workshops below, or book an appointment with an International Student Advisor.

Note: As of April 1, 2026, post-secondary international students no longer need a co-op work permit for program-required work placements, such as co-ops, internships and practicums.
