Preparing for Your Co-op Work Term

Continuation with the Co-op Program and enrollment in the course module is dependent upon a student receiving a valid co-op offer for that academic year. Students who do not receive an offer will continue with the current academic stream with no penalties or fees applied.

Students who successfully secure a Co-op are required to complete the following steps prior to the start of their work term:

Students may not take any academic courses during their co-op work term, unless granted special permission by the Associate Dean (Undergraduate), Faculty of Social Science. Only those students with a cumulative average of at least 75% are eligible for special permission.

Please email the Social Science Co-op Team at sscoop@uwo.ca with your request including the course code and session type, outline of your time-management plan, and rationale for taking the course prior to your return to campus. All requests will be reviewed and submitted to the Associate Dean (Undergraduate) for consideration.

A maximum of 0.5 additional course credits per 4-month work-term will be considered.

The Social Science Co-op Agreement is an important document which outlines the responsibilities of the student, co-op supervisor, and the Program coordinator. By signing, students agree the terms and conditions of the co-op and can be formally enrolled in the credit-bearing co-op module.

By signing the Social Science Co-op Agreement, students also agree to pay the program fee. As of May 2023, the program fee is $500 per work 4-months out on co-op ($1,000 for 8-months, $1,500 for 12-months, etc.). This fee will be applied to a student’s record upon course enrollment and is payable through Student Center within 30 days of the course appearing on students’ records (See Fee Payment Methods).

Payment of fees is the sole responsibility of the student, not the employer.

Once students sign and submit their Social Science Co-op Agreement to the Social Science Co-op Team, they are obligated to pay the co-op fee in full unless exempted at the discretion of the Associate Dean (Undergraduate); The co-op fee is NON-REFUNDABLE. Late payment of the co-op fee will result in the accrual of late charges at the current university rate. Independent of course deliverable completion, non-payment of the co-op fee results in a co-op failure.

While completing a co-op, students do not pay tuition fees, but students residing in Canada for their work term will automatically be assessed for the student health & dental plan fees (including myvirtualdoctor.ca) every September. Should a student wish to opt out of the health plan, dental plan, or myvirtualdoctor.ca, they must do so by the opt out deadline. Students must provide proof of alternate coverage to opt out of the health plan, however they can opt out of dental and myvirtualdoctor.ca as long as they submit the opt out form by the deadline.

Students enrolled in the co-op course (0.5 academic credit) and other coursework (maximum 0.5 additional course credit while out on full-time work term), should connect with a Financial Aid Officer at finaid@uwo.ca to review funding eligibility – this is especially important if students intend to pursue Fall or Winter co-op opportunities.

*Must be OSAP-eligible; visit OSAP for eligibility requirements.

Out-of-province students should contact their provincial lender for funding inquiries.
